Vandy’ recognized for innovation and safety in electric vehicle design.

Thiruvananthapuram, October 17, 2022: Acsia Technologies, a global leader in automotive software powering Connected Vehicles, Infotainment Systems, and e-Mobility, today announced that the team from Government Engineering College, Thiruvananthapuram mentored by Acsia secured top honors at the prestigious Shell Eco-Marathon (SEM) 2022 held at the Pertamina Mandalika circuit in Indonesia.

An electric car named ‘Vandy,’ designed by the engineering students clinched the International Award for Safety from Dupont and received an Honorable Mention in the International Award for Technical Innovation category. The Minister for Higher Education, Government of Kerala, Dr. R. Bindu, played a pivotal role in facilitating the student team’s access to grants and schemes, underscoring the collaborative effort behind this achievement.

The team, named Pravega, comprised 19 students from the mechanical engineering stream of the college, showcased exceptional talent and dedication throughout the project. Their electric car stood out among entries from across the globe, emerging as the best-in-class after rigorous interviews and tests. With a top speed of 27 kmph and weighing approximately 80 kgs, Vandy symbolizes sustainable engineering and environmental consciousness.

Expressing gratitude for the support received, Kalyani S. Kumar, Team Leader of Pravega, said, “We received invaluable mentorship from Acsia Technologies, which enabled us to realize our vision of creating an environmentally friendly vehicle.” Jijimon Chandran, Founder & CEO of Acsia Technologies, added, “We are thrilled to witness the remarkable achievement of the students. Acsia is delighted to be a part of their success and is committed to continue nurturing young talent and fostering innovation in engineering.”

The design inspiration for Vandy stems from the biomimicry of Tiger Sharks, integrating recycled and biodegradable materials in its construction. Notably, the vehicle features an innovative battery thermal management system developed by the team, leveraging sustainable energy technologies and assessments, as published in a research paper. Additionally, advanced safety features, including a drowsiness detection system powered by AI, highlight the team’s focus on technological innovation and user safety.

The success of Team Pravega underscores the importance of collaboration between academia, industry, and government in promoting innovation and sustainability. Supported by various organizations and institutions, including Acsia Technologies, Canara Bank, and Red Maple Realtors, the project exemplifies the potential of interdisciplinary collaboration in driving progress and addressing global challenges.

The commendable efforts of Dr. Bijulal D, Principal of Government Engineering College, Dr. Bindu Kumar, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Dr. Anish K. John, Faculty Advisor, further contributed to the success of the project, reflecting a shared commitment to excellence in education and research.

The Shell Eco-Marathon serves as a platform for students worldwide to demonstrate their ingenuity and creativity in designing energy-efficient vehicles. Team Pravega’s achievement not only brings recognition to their alma mater but also reinforces India’s growing prominence in the field of sustainable automotive engineering.
